Maxine and John Wagner

Maxine and her author, John Wagner

Maxine…where do you come from?

From someone with a warped mind and sense of humor most likely!  Or perhaps someone who is quite ordinary?  Actually she is the product of one man’s imagination (yup – a man) with a little help from some real people.

John Wagner is the creator of Maxine.  He works at Hallmark and says Maxine was inspired by his mother, his maiden aunts and his grandmother.  He remembers doodling as a preschooler
and says both his grandmother and his mother
encouraged his artistic interests. He eventually
attended the Vesper George School of Art in
Boston and landed at Hallmark as part of a
new artists group. With the birth of the
humorous Shoebox Greetings
(a tiny little division of Hallmark) in 1986, a new dimension was added to John’s
professional life.

“Cartoonists are sensitive to the insanities of
the world; we just try to humanize them,”
he says.

“If Maxine can get a laugh out of
someone who feels lonely or someone who
is getting older and hates the thought of
another birthday, or if she can make someone chuckle about stressful interpersonal
relationships, then I’m happy. Putting a
smile on someone’s face is what it’s all about.”

 John Wagner’s “Old Lady”

When people at Shoebox
started referring to the character as
”John Wagner’s old lady,” he knew that would
not fly with his wife.  The Shoebox team had a contest among
themselves to name the character and three of the approximately 30 entries suggested
”Maxine”.   John says the name is perfect.

What does Maxine have to say about politics?  Well – here’s what she says….

Maxine’s Motto:

Live your life in such a way that in the morning,
when your feet hit the floor, Satan shudders and says…
“Oh Crap!  She’s awake!”

‘Tis the season – no – not Christmas – but the political season – which will run for another 11 months.  Oh Joy!  To The World.  We will all be “fried” with political commercials, which will be extremely negative with a lot of mudslinging before the “season” is over.  There will be a lot of satirical comment, comedic representations, cartoons and most certainly a lot of political comments.  Unfortunately the one thing that will be missing is polite political discourse.  I don’t know about you but I’m thinking I want to find as much humor throughout this “political season” as possible to offset the vitriol that is sure to occur.  Humor about all sides.  So Here are some cartoons I have found recently.  I hope they will bring a smile to your face.

Old Woman in a Shoe

Everyone is now in a Shoe

Obama and the Grinch

Is this what people see when they look at me?

As we go through this “Season” please note the political cartoons you see and share them here.  All cartoons will be reviewed before being published here.  Enjoy!

I don’t know about you but I am disgusted with the political climate in this country.  We have become so polarized that it is almost impossible to have a good, clean, conversation with someone who has different political views than you do.  The art of conversation is lost with all the accusations and demonization of those who believe differently than we do.  When was the last time someone actually listened to what you had to say without interrupting you and trying to change your mind?  And – more importantly – when was the last time you listened to someone else try to explain their position without you interrupting and giving them a counterpoint?    Do you know the definition of insanity?  When you do the same thing over and over and expect different results.  Using this definition, it seems like all the so called stimulus packages have not changed anything.  It just seems that we cannot continue to spend money we do not have. I do not pretend to have the answers – in fact I have a lot more questions than answers.  Is taxing the rich an answer?  As I understand it, we can tax the rich until the cows come home and it will not put a dent in the deficit we now have.  So what needs to be done?  What are your thoughts on this?  Please keep your comments civilized.  Let’s try to make this a civilized discourse.

For the past several months we have already been inundated with political announcements, ads etc.  Once the primary season ended here, the ads let up a bit.  Well – it is about to heat up again as we get closer to the fall elections.  Our County Fair (a very small fair by any standard) had the usual political booths – one for the Dems and one for the Republicans (is there a nickname for them?).  We have an interesting race shaping up for County Attorney though.  The two candidates both had a booth and did their best to convince county citizens they were the best one for the job.  The next group to start campaigning are those running for school board and for city council positions.  It has occurred to me on more than one occasion, how fortunate we are to have anyone who wants to run for these positions.  Generally these position are pretty much non-political.  Politics comes into play when someone is running for a state or national office.

These days it does not take too long to figure out where one’s political “bent” lies.  What is a challenge is to have a nice, political, respectful discourse with anyone who does not agree with you.  Usually, if I sense they do not believe as I do, I keep my mouth shut and just listen.  To do otherwise is inviting trouble.  How did we get to this place?  How did we get to this point where disagreement means “bad”?  To serve in government used to be something awesome and that young people aspired to – where and when did that change so drastically?  I’m not sure I would want to run for even the Dog Catcher position anymore (it doesn’t exist in our town so I am safe in saying that)!

What do you think?  Have we “lost it” as a society already?  I sure hope not – for the sake of our grandchildren and their children.
